The MSR MIOX Purifier is the easiest and most reliable device available for purifying large volumes of water. The MIOX is virtually effortless to operate, and requires a capful of table salt, squirt of water, and a click of a button to purify up to 4 liters of water at one time. The MIOX is the most innovative addition to the water purifier market in years. It’s a super lightweight purifier (3.5 ounces), no bigger than a small flashlight (7”x1”), that purifies large volumes of water at one time, eliminating the need for tons of pumping. Its requirements? A thimble of water, a capful of table salt, and a couple of batteries. Voila, you have 4 liters of great tasting, PURIFIED water. Nearly effortless to operate, the MIOX is excellent for group excursions, travel abroad, or any situation that calls for large amounts of drinking water (think humanitarian work). HOW IT WORKS: Fill the main chamber with untreated or treated water, add salt in the top cap, and shake about 10 times to create a brine solution. Next, press the activation button 1-4 times depending on the volume of water you’re treating (up to 4 liters per treatment). This action sends an electric charge through the saltwater, causing a chemical reaction that produces a small and powerful dose of mixed oxidants (hence MIOX). Pour this “cocktail” into untreated water to eliminate chemicals, protozoa, amoeba, bacteria, and viruses. Let sit 15 minutes to remove viruses and bacteria, 30 minutes for giardia, and 4 hours for cryptosporidia. The kit includes: the purifier itself (pen), 2 CR-123 batteries, a small bag of rock salt (table salt works just as well), instructions, storage sack, and Safety Indicator Strips to test water to ensure it’s safe. Each unit is waterproof, virtually maintenance-free, and tested before it leaves the factory. BATTERIES INCLUDED. Replacement test strips and salt available [CAS0268].

Purification
The Miox is the best purifier that I've owned to date. The Miox system is amazing with how short the treatment time is. The only down side, but this usually applies to most purifiers, is that the big chunks of sand or dirt, whatever it might be. Just use some cheese cloth and you have clean, parasite free water.
Not so tasty
I didn't want to carry around a bulky water filter, so I picked up this nifty gadget. Very light and compact, and easy to use once you know how (learn before you go). The problem is, it gives your water a noticeable chlorine taste, which I had not expected. Not nearly as bad as iodine tablets (Blech!), but about the same as heavily treated city water (not so great). You could probably hide the taste with drink crystals I guess. I don't really want my water smelling like a swimming pool. I think maybe I'll pick up a filter instead.
Works Great/Smells Funky
I really like this purifier. It is fast and easy but the only drawback is the treated water smells/tastes a little like pool water. But other than that it is great.
Takes some patience.
The idea of this thing is wonderful, and it works well.. but it takes a while to get the hang of it. Once you figure it out, it does an amazing job, and is well worth the money. But make sure to practice with it at home before you go on your trip.. it'll take time to learn how to tweak it correctly.
High Tech in the Backcountry
What a simple instument to use. It is like 1, 2, 3, and wait 15 minutes and you have clean water. I decided to keep it in my 72 hour Emergency Kit between camping trips because I want clean water in bad situations. What a great techno gadget this is!
