Do You Collect Rainwater? water filters should be used to purify rainwater for drinking purposes

Rainwater Collection ...

if used for drinking then it should be passed through appropriate water filters to purify the water. See below for different types of water filters since no single water filter can do a complete ob of purification of rainwater.

Even today many people rely upon on the collection of rainwater for home, household, landscape, and farming uses.

In some parts of the world including my own country South Africa, people still depend upon rainwater collection systems to meet most of their water needs. Most is used without recourse to any type of water filter.

Most rainwater collection systems are designed to capture rainwater from the roofs of buildings. The water is then diverted through gutters and drain pipes into storage tanks, where it is stored until needed. The water collected can be used for drinking water, depending upon the materials used and the treatment undertaken by the homeowner but it should be filtered first.

A typical rainwater collection system works as follows ... rain falls onto a large surface area like a roof which means even a short rain storm can result in a large amount of water being collected. The rain water runs into a tank and it is then normally pumped to its final destination point. The pump will normally start up automatically when the tap or faucet is opened.

Rain water collected in this way and to be used for drinking should be filtered. In addition care should taken that materials into which the rainwater comes into contact are non-toxic in their own right. In the past many roofs (and still the case in Africa) were made from asbestos for example. In addition, lead products in any form, such as used for flashing, should not be used in a rainwater collection system if the water is to be drunk.
